B1.9 - Active Transport Flashcards
What does active transport do?
Active transport moves substances from a more dilute solution to a more concentrated solution (against the concentration gradient, from an area of low concentration to an area of high concentration.
What does active transport need for it to happen?
Energy
Where does the energy for active transport come from?
Energy released from food in respiration.
How is active transport used in plant roots?
Active transport is used in plant roots to get as much water from the ground as possible. The water that in is low concentration in the ground is moved into the plant where water is in high concentration.
How is active transport used in the blood/the gut?
Sugar that is in the gut in low concentration is moved by active transport into the blood where the concentration of sugar is higher.
What is a space related example for how active transport works?
Active transport works like an airlock.
Why is active transport important?
Active transport is important for when substances need to be moved against the concentration.
