B18 - Biodiversity + ecosystems Flashcards
B18 - Describe the various ways that biodiversity can be maintained.
Biodiversity is the variety of all life on earth.
Breeding programmes for endangered species.
Protection and regeneration of rare habitats.
Reintroduction of field margins and hedgerows - farmers should replant hedgerows to increase the biodiversity of their fields and countryside.
Reduction of deforestation and carbon emissions.
B18 - Explain how the greenhouse effect causes an increase in global temperatures.
Radiation from the sun enters the earth’s atmosphere and warms the surface of the planet.
The earth’s surface becomes hotter and radiates heat back out.
Some of this heat is absorbed by greenhouse gases. These gases then radiate the heat back towards earth.
The atmosphere becomes hotter as a result.
B18 - What are the effects of global warming
Loss of habitat
Changes in distribution
Changes in migration patterns
Reduced biodiversity
