B1.7 Flashcards
What is osmosis?
Osmosis is the movement of water molecules across a partially permeable membrane.
How is osmosis different from diffusion?
Osmosis only involves the movement of water molecules, while diffusion involves the movement of any type of particle.
What is a partially permeable membrane?
A partially permeable membrane only allows certain substances to pass through.
What is a dilute solution?
A solution with a low concentration of solute (and a high concentration of water).
What is a concentrated solution?
A solution with a high concentration of solute (and a low concentration of water).
What happens to a cell in a HYPOTONIC solution?
The cell will swell and may burst
What happens to a cell in a HYPERTONIC solution?
The cell will shrink and shrivel.
What is an isotonic solution?
A solution with the same concentration of solute as the cell.
Why is osmosis important for animal cells?
Osmosis helps maintain the internal concentration of the cell.
How do animal cells maintain their water balance?
Animal cells use various mechanisms like osmosis, active transport, and the excretion of waste products to maintain water balance.
