B16 Flashcards
Producer
Produces are organisms that can produce biomass (organic material) for themselves. Most producers do this using photosynthesis.
Consumers
Consumers are organisms that have to consume other organisms.
Predators
An animal that hunts animals to kill its prey
Prey
An animal that is consumed by its predator.
Why must material in the living world be recycled ?
As when they are recycled, nutrients are released from the soil and animals.
What chemical elements are recycled when animals and plants decay?
Carbon, oxygen, hydrogen, and nitrogen
Who uses carbon dioxide in the atmosphere and what for ?
Plants and trees take in carbon dioxide for photosynthesis.
Why is the water cycle important ?
As it provides fresh water for the animals and plants on land.
What is the role of photosynthesis in the carbon cycle ?
During photosynthesis, plants absorb carbon dioxidde and sunlight, to create fuel and other sugars.
What is the role of respiration in the carbon cycle ?
Respiration is the process in which carbohydrates are converted to water and carbon dioxide, so that carbon is released again into the air.
What is the role of combustion in the carbon cycle ?
Combustion occurs when something is burned, such as fossil fuels, to give off carbon dioxide and energy.
