B16 Flashcards
Measuring distribution with a quadrat
• square frame laid on the ground which outlines sample area
• used to investigate the size of a population of plants
•use the same size quadrat every time
• sample as many areas as possible
• samples must be random - spin around with closed eyes, open and
walk ten paces
• random number generator
• take several random readings then find the mean - known as quantitative sampling
Counting along a transect
• Line transect - stretch a line of tape between two points
• often done where you think a change is linked to an abiotic factor
• sample organisms along that line at regular intervals using a quadrat
• shows how distribution of organisms changes along the line
