B12-Reproduction Flashcards
Phenotype
The appearance of an individual regarding a particular characteristic
Genotype
The genetics of an individual regarding a particular characteristic
Allele
Alternative forms of a gene
Dominant
Alleles which will always be dominant in the phenotype, shown as a capital letter like B
Recessive
Alleles that only appear if there isn’t any dominant allele that overpower it, shown as a lower case letter like b
Homozygous
Both alleles are the same, for example, BB or bb
Heterozygous
The alleles are different, for example, Bb
Gametes
The sex cells (ova and sperm in animals, ovules and pollen in plants) that only contain one set of chromosomes and carry one of the two alleles that the parents have in their cells
Offspring
The generation produced from the reproduction of the two parents
