B1.1.1 Plant and Animal cells Flashcards
Eukaryotic Cells
contain genetic material in the nucleus
relatively large and complex
plant and animal cells are eukaryotic cells
Prokaryotic Cells
do not contain a nucleus
simple
smaller than eukaryotic cells
bacterial cells are prokaryotic cells
What do Eukaryotic Cells contain?
nucleus
cytoplasm
cell membrane
mitochondria
Role of nucleus?
controls activity of cell
contains organism’s genetic material in form of chromosomes
instruction to make new cells/new organisms
determines function and appearance of cell
Role of cell membrane?
selective barrier - controls what passes into and out of cell
contains receptor molecules
Role of mitochondria?
respiration occurs here
special protein molecules (enzymes) enable oxygen and glucose to react together
reaction transfers vital energy to organism
Role of cytoplasm?
“jellylike” substance
chemical reactions that keep cell alive happen here
What do plant cells contain?
nucleus cell membrane cytoplasm mitochondria vacuole cell wall chloroplasts
Role of chloroplast?
contain green chlorophyll -> which transfer energy from the sun -> then used in photosynthesis
only found in green parts of plants (e.g leaf cells)
Role of cell wall?
surrounds the cell
made of tough fibre called cellulose
makes wall rigid and supports cell
Role of vacuole?
full of cell sap, watery solution of sugar and salts
helps keep cell rigid -> supporting plant and keeping it upright
