Pituitary gland
Controls growth in children
Adrenal gland
produces adrenaline which prepares the body for action
Ovaries
produces progesterone and oestrogen which controls female sexual development
Testes
releases testosterone which controls male sexual development and sperm production
Pancreas
releases hormones which control glucose levels in the blood
Thyroid gland
produces thyroxine which controls the metabolism of the body
What are hormones?
chemical messengers which travel in the blood to its target organ, where it binds to receptors on the cell membranes to trigger an effect
What is the difference between the nervous system and hormones?
Compared to the nervous system, the effect of hormones are typically slower but longer lasting
What does the endocrine system work with and why?
The endocrine system works alongside the nervous system to maintain a constant internal environment (homeostasis)
How many major glands are there?

What is type 1 diabetes?
disease where the body’s immune system attacks and destroys the cells that produce the insulin needed.
How is type 1 caused?
when the body cant get enough of insulin which actually controls the blood glucose
How it type 1 diabetes treated?
you need to have daily injections of insulin to make sure your blood glucose levels are kept controlled
What is type 2 diabetes?
when the body cant produce enough insulin or the cells of the body don’t react to the insulin made
What causes type 2 diabetes?
when someone suffering from it has a meal or food that includes a lot of sugar that cannot be matched/controlled with the amount insulin the body already has
