B10 - Human Nervous System Flashcards
Homeostasis
The regulation of the internal conditions of a cell or organism to maintain optimum conditions for functions in response to internal and external change.
Receptors
Cells that defect changes inside and outside the body.
Co-Ordination Centres (brain, spinal cord, pancreas)
Receive information, processes it and organises a response.
Effectors
Produce the response to the change.
Sense Organ - Eye
Receptor - Light receptors.
Stimulus - Changes in light.
Sense Organ - Nose
Receptor - Chemical Receptors.
Stimulus - Chemical Stimuli.
Sense Organ - Ear
Receptor - Sound and Balance Receptors.
Stimulus - Vibrations.
Sense Organ - Tongue
Receptor - Taste Receptors.
Stimulus - Chemical Stimuli
Sense Organ - Skin
Receptor - Temperature, pressure and touch receptors.
Stimulus - Touch and temperature changes.
Order of The Nervous System
Stimulus - Receptor - Sensory Neurone - Relay Neurone - Motor Neurone - Co-Ordinator(CNS) - Effector - Response
Synapse
Tiny gap between the 2 neurones.
Sensory Neurone
- Carries impulses from sensory organs to the CNS.
- Carry signals from receptors to the spinal cord and the brain.
Relay Neurone
Carry messages from one part of the CNS to another.
Motor Neurone
Carry signals from CNS to the effectors.
Internal Condition - Body Temperature
S (Change in Temp) - R (Skin) - CC (Brain) - E (Skin/Muscles)
Internal Condition - Water Content of the Body
S (Change in water in blood) - R (Brain) - CC (Glands) - E (Kidneys).
Internal Condition - Blood Glucose
S (Change in Blood Glucose) - R (Pancreas) - CC (Pancreas) - E (Liver).
Nervous System
- Acts very quickly.
- Electrical Impulse carries the message.
- Chemical Messenger diffuses across a synapse.
- Co-ordinate a response by the body.
