B1- infectious diseases Flashcards
what are infectious diseases caused by?
pathogens-microoroganisms
what is athletes foot caused by? Cholera?flu?dysentry
fungi, bacteria, virus, protozoa
what are the symptoms caused by?
toxins made by the pathogens or cell damage
what is malaria caused by?
protozoan
what is a protozoan?
it is a parasite and it lives of other organisms (host)
why can the mosquitoes not get the disease?
because they are vectors meaning they can carry the disease without getting it themselves
how can we stop the mozzies?
by putting fish in water to eat mosquitoes larvae (eggs), put nets up before sleeping or use insecticide, and they can put the insecticides in the water
what do the white blood cells do to kill the pathogens?
they consume them-to eat, they produce antitoxins to effect any of the toxins that the pathogen produces, and they produce antibodies
what is an antigen?
no two pathogens have the same cells and the molecules are called antigens
what do the antibodies do?
the white blood cells find a foreign antigen-they start to produce antibodies which kill invading cells-the antibodies are produced to the specific antigen.
