B1 - Cells & Organisms Flashcards
How do you calculate magnification
Image Size
Actual Size
How much can a light microscope magnify by and what is the resovling power?
2000x and 200 nm
How much can an electron microscope magnify by and what is the resoving power?
2,000,000x and 0.2 nm
What are all the cell features of an animal?
Nucleus, mitochondria, cell membrane and ribosomes
What are the cell features of a plant?
Cell wall, celulose cell wall, large permanant vacuole and chloroplasts
What do eukaryotic cells have the fetures of?
Features of an animal cell, cell membrane, nucleus, mitochondria and ribosomes
What do prokaryotic cells have features of.
Cytoplasm with a cell membrane and a cell wall has no nucleus and only one loop of DNA
What is diffusion?
Diffusion is the spreading out of particles from an area of higher concentration to an area of low concentration
How can the rate of diffusion be affected?
The difference in concentrations, the temperature and the amount of avalible surface area
What is osmosis?
The movement of water molecules across a partially permeable membrane from a reigion of concentrated solution to a region of dilute solution
What is active transport?
Hairs on the side of the root cell gives the plant a large surface area to help the plant absorb water and mineral ions
