B1- cell biology Flashcards
What do plant cells have that animals cells do not?
Vacuole
What is the function of the Nucleus?
Contains genetic material
What is the function of the Mitochondria?
Where most aerobic respiration happens
What is the function of Ribosomes?
This is where proteins are made
What is the function of Chloroplasts?
Where photosynthesis happens
What is the function of the Cell wall?
Supporting the cell
What is the function of the Cell Membrane?
Controls what goes in and out of cell
What is the function of a Vacuole?
Contains cell sap
What are 3 ways substances can move in and out of cells?
Diffusion ,Osmosis, Active Transport
What is diffusion?
The movement of particles from where there are lots of them to where there is fewer.
What is osmosis?
Osmosis is the diffusion of water from a dilute solution to a concentrated solution through a partially permeable membrane
What is active transport?
When substances need to be absorbed from a lower concentration to a higher concentration
Give an example of a EUKARYOTIC cell
Animal cell, plant cell
Give an example of a PROKARYOTIC cell
Bacterial cell
What is missing in a prokaryotic cell?
A nucleus
What is a plasmid?
Small rings of extra DNA
What is an independent variable?
Something that can be changed in an experiment
What is a dependent variable?
Variable being tested or measured during the experiment
What can you use a light microscope to see?
Larger things in a cell
What can you use an electron microscope to see?
Smaller things in a cell
Which lens do you start with when you use a microscope? why?
Smallest/ lowest magnification- Gives larger field view
What is the equation for working out magnification?
Magnification = Image size / Real size
What is in an animal cell?
Nucleus
Cytoplasm
Mitochondria
Cell membrane
Ribosomes
