B1- Cell Biology Flashcards
What is a eukaryotic cell?
A cell with membrane-bound organelles
What kind of cells are eukaryotic cells?
Plant and animal cells
What is a prokaryotic cell?
A cell without membrane bound organelles
Which is bigger: eukaryotic cells or prokaryotic cells?
Eukaryotic cells
What kind of cells are prokaryotic cells?
Bacterial cells
What is the function of the nucleus?
Contains genetic information
Controls the cells activities
What is the function of the cytoplasm?
Contains the cell’s organelles
Contains enzymes
Where chemical reactions occur
What is the function of the cell membrane?
Controls what enters and exits the cell
What is the function of the ribosomes?
Sites of proteinsynthesis
What is the function of the chloroplast?
Contains chlorophyll which absorb light for photosynthesis
What is the function of the vacuole?
Contains cell sap (a mixture of sugar, salt and water)
What is the function of the cell wall?
Gives the cell its shape
Provides strength and support for the cell
What are plasmids?
Small rings of DNA which carry extra genes such as antibiotic resistance
What is the function of the mitochondria?
Provides the cell with energy by releasing it from aerobic respiration
What is the function of singular circular strands of DNA?
Contains the bacterial cell’s DNA as it doesn’t have a nucleus
