B1 Biology Cells Flashcards
What cells are eukaryotic?
Animal and plant cells
What is a Prokaryotic cell?
Has no nucelus
Which cell is a Prokaryotic cell?
Bacterial cells
What does the nucleus do?
Controls activity of the cell
What happens in the cytoplasm?
Chemical reactions take place in the cytoplasm
What does the cell membrane do?
Controls movement in and out of the cell
What does mitochondria do?
Release energy by respiration
What do ribosomes do?
Protein synthesis
What does the cell wall do?
Strengthens the cell, made of cellulose
What do chloroplasts do?
Absorb light energy for photosynthesis, contains chlorophyll
What is the permanent vacuole?
Filled with cell sap to give the structure turgid
What is bacterial DNA?
Loop of DNA not found in the nucleus
What is a plasmid?
Small ring of DNA often used as a vector in genetic modification
What is the function of a sperm cell?
To fertilise the egg
Name 3 features about a sperm cell that supports the function of the cell
1) Streamlined with a long flagellum to swim towards the egg
2) Mitochondria in the mid section to release energy to swim faster towards the egg
3) Acrosome in the head to digest the egg cell membrane
