B1 Flashcards
What is active transport
the movement of substances from a dilute solution to a more concentrated solution against a concentration gradient
What is algae
Simple aquatic organisms (protists) that make their own food by photosynthesis
What is alveoli? Function?
Tiny air sacs in the lungs. Increase eurface area of gaseous exchange
What is bacteria
Single-celled prokaryotic organisms
Cell wall
Rigid structure around plant and algal cells. Made up of cellulose, strengthens the cell
Chlorophyll
The green pigment contained in the chloroplasts
What is diffusion
The spreading out of particles of any substance in a solution.
Results in net movement of particles from an area of higher concentration to an area of lower concentration
What are Eukaryotic cells
Cells from eukaryotes that have a cell membrane, cytoplasm and genetic material
What is Osmosis
The diffusion of waterthrough a partially permeable membrane from a dilute solution
Prokaryotic cells
Have a cytoplasm surrounded by cell membrane and a cell wall
What is the stomata
The opening of leaves in plants. (Usually on underside of plants) Open and closed by guard cells
What is xylem
Non-living transport tissues in plants that transport water from roots to the leaves
What is phloem
Living transport rissue in plants that carries dissolved sugars around the plant
