Expelled Jewish people and started the Spanish Inquisition.
What was the Spanish Inquisition?
Those who challenged the Catholic Church were found, punished (tortured) and put on trial.
What was the result of the expulsion of Muslims an Jews and the Spanish Inquisition?
Spain’s economy crashed since they lost skilled and knowledgeable Muslims and Jews.

Why was gold desired by Spain?
Their economy was weakened and they needed to pay armies to protect and expand their empire. The economy crashed after centuries of war.

The Catholic Monarchs were hopeful he would find gold on his voyage to bring back the economy to what it was.
