AYLI Flashcards
“She is too subtle for thee, and her smoothness, her very silence, and her patience speak to the people and they pity her”
Sibilance
Shows how rosalind will never be able to belong in the context of the county due to the fact that she is duke seniors daughter, this status creates a bad image of her personality for the Duke. She is judged from her fathers behaviour rather than her own, this not being able to express her true self
“For my part, he keeps me rustically at home….for a gentlemen of my birth the differs not from the stalling of an ox”
Metaphor
Orlando tells Adam how his brother Oliver is rejecting him. This demeans Orlando and consequently Oliver won’t allow Orlando to feel a sense of belonging
“Mistress dispatch you from your safest haste and get you from our court”
Aggressive tone
Rosalind will now retreat to a new environment where she can be accepted and can openly express her true self showing that she is the daughter of duke senior.
“Was” to “am” in “‘twas I but it’s not I, I do not shame to tell you what I am, since my conversion. So sweetly tastes being the things I am”
Shift in tense, past to present
Highlights Oliver’s awakening and self realisation of his own conscience despite his previous animosity towards his own brother Orlando. Oliver exits the toxic environment of the court and exposed himself to the pure acts of kindness in the relationships within the forest; in turn he had an epiphany of self-realisation.
“Made a pair of stairs to marriage; which they will climb”
Metaphor
Creates a loving tone in which she feels that she can now be her true self. She now has the support of Orlando to conquer life’s challenges. Hence, she feels a sense of true belonging. This highlights that the forest is a place of spiritual fulfilment and acceptance that can bring meaning to ones life.
