AXIAL SKELETON Flashcards
1
Q
What is skeletal system?
A
Generally described in two parts, the skeletal system consists of the axial skeleton and the appendicular skeleton
2
Q
What parts of the body that the axial skeleton comprise?
A
- skull
- vertebral column
- rib cage & sternum

Q
AXIAL SKELETON
Functions of the skull
A
- protective shell for BRAIN and SENSORY ORGANS
- lower part giving form to the face
- BASE of skull joins with first vertebrae of spine
Articulation of the two bones allows for a range of movements.
INCLUDING: nodding and sideways movements - bones of the skull have unique joints called SUTURES which interlock and are held together with FIBEROUS CONNECTIVE TISSUE

Q
AXIAL SKELETON
Functions of the Vertebral Column
A
- tower of bones called vertebrae, each separated by a CUSHIONING PAD of CARTILAGE called the INTERVERTEBRAL DISC
- limited movement individually but a highly mobile unit collectively
- RIGID when held by back muscles so that ACTIVITIES such as: lifting can be performed

Q
AXIAL SKELETON
Functions of the rib cage & sternum
A
- ribs of THORACIC CAGE join vertebrae , encircling the HEART and LUNGS.
- true ribs, 1st SEVEN, join at the front to the STERNUM, next 3 ribs, false ribs, join to one another and then attach to the LAST TRUE RIB
- remaining two ribs, FLOATING RIBS, do not extend to the front
