What are the four functional roles of axial skeleton?
- Support and protective framework for internal organs
- Skull houses special sensory organs (ear, tongue, eyeball)
- Vertebral column and ribs provide extensive attachment for muscles moving the head, neck, trunk, and limbs
- Thoracic cage performs movements during respiration
What are the two parts that make up the skull?
- Neurocranium (flat bone)
- Viscerocranium (mandible)
Where are tears produced?
In the lacrimal gland located in the lacrimal bone
What is the upper teeth?
Maxilla
What is the lower teeth?
Mandible
Which suture crosses the frontal and parietal?
Coronal
Which suture crosses the parietal and occipital?
Lambdoid
Which suture crosses the parietal and temporal?
Squamous
Where is cranial nerve II located?
In the optic canal
Which part of the skull helps with mastication (chewing)?
Zygomatic arch
What is the foramen magnum?
Where the brain (medulla) and spinal cord connect
What is the jugular foramen?
Where the internal jugular vein exists from
What are the three characteristics of the temporal bone?
- Neumatized bone
- Highly complex
- Contain the three smallest bones in the body (ear ossicles)
What is the mastoid process?
Air cells
What is the mandibular fossa?
Concave space right above zygomatic arch
What is the external acoustic meatus?
Entrance from external ear to middle ear
