What is a reserved instance?
In AWS you can reserve an instance and this gives you a guarantee this instance is available to you when you need it. You also get a discount.
Is a reserved instance a physical or virtual instance?
No, a reserved instance is a billing construct.
If I curches a c4 RI, and then provision a C4 instance, what will happen?
I will get a discount for the C4 instance I just launched because I previously reserved a C4 instance
I already have an on-demand T2 instance running in my AWS account, I purchase a T2 RI, what will happen?
The RI discount will be applied to my existing T2 on-demand instance
When you reserve an instance, what parameters do you need?
Payment option: no upfront, partial upfront, all upfront Term: 1 or 3 Offer class: standard and convertible Instance type: m4.large Scope: region or AZ Tenancy: shared or single tenancy Platform: Windows or Linux
Is there a limit on the number of RI I can purchase each month?
Yes, 20 per region and 20 per AZ
What is a standard reserved instance?
You can change the size, but the instance cannot be modified. You can not exchange the standard reserved instance, only modified it. You cna sell it.
Can I modify a reserved instance?
Yes, you can, but only in limited ways, - you can change size in the same family and still get a discount. -you can change
Are reserved instances only for EC2?
No, you can have reserved instance for, -Redshift -EC2 -RDS -Elastic cache -Dynamo DB
What it the typical range of discount for RI?
30 - 75%
Sould I be keeping in my mong the RI are one of the main tools to reduce cost?
Yes 100%, need to keep this in you mind.
When you purches an RI in a orgnization account, where is the RI applied first?
To the account where the RI was purchesed. If the RI can not be applied to the account, it will flow to other accounts in the orgnizatin.
Canb I restrict the RI to a single account?
Yes, but this means if it can not be used it wis forfit. This is done through orgnizations consolidated billing.
When I buy a RI and I gaurenteed a capacity reservation for my instance?
Yes 100%,, you are gaurenteed thta you will be able to start your instance in the account where the instance was purchesed.
What is a convertable RI?
Modifiable, you can change, -OS - Insnatannce - family Only a 3year term
What is a standard RI?
Not modifiable, 1 & 3 year term Upfront cash option -no upfront -partial -Full Can not change instance family Only linux instyance can be combiled or devided
What is a regional RI?
With a regional RI I can use the RI in any of the regiona AZ’s. A regional RI can be a standared or convertable RI.
What is a Redional convertable RI?
It is an RI thet is regional meaning it is applied to all AZ in the region.
What is a AZ RI?
You are restriected to a AZ. This was the way it was before regional RI’s.
I ant to take advantage of the cost saving of an REI and alos my app nbeed a gaurentee it will always have the capacity to launch, what is my bets options?
Use the less flexable AZ RI as it can get you a discount but also has the capacity reserivation. Regional RI do not come with a capacity reserivation.
Do regional RI’s have a capacaity reserivation?
No.
I have an orgniozation with consolidated billing ebnableds, when a buy an RI in an accountt will it flow to all other accounts?
Yes, the account is was purchesed in get first offer and then the RI flows to the other accounts.
I have a convertable RI and I wnat to convert it to a smaler instyance size, is this possible?
No, instance size has to be equal or grater in size.
What is a zonal RI?
This is where the RI I chsose (standared or convertable) is tied to a AZ.
