AWS Global Infrastructure Flashcards
AWS is responsible for
protecting the infrastructure that runs all of AWS’s Cloud services allowing customers to cut back their own internal cost and focus on internal matters (like their client data)
o Cloud infrastructure built on top of regions and AZs
Current number of Regions & Avail. Zones
24 regions, 72 Avail. Zones, numerous edge zones
Define Region
physical location in the world (APAC, EMEA, NorAM).
Each region has at least 2+ AZs and is completely isolated from other regions
Can deploy resources across multiple regions as well, however resources (products/solutions) across region’s aren’t automatically replicated to another region
Define Avail. Zones
independent data centers which is a building filled with servers
AZ consist of one or more discrete data centers
AZ’s are located close to one another, but not dependent on one another in case of a failover
When you launch an instance, you can select an AZ or let AWS choose for you
Edge Locations
Content delivery network endpoints for CloudFront used for caching content (think Cloudfront, CDN aka middleman for downloading content to accelerate download)
Currently over 100+ edge locations
How do you choose the right AWS region
o Data Sovereignty Laws (EU Data privacy laws)
o Latency to End users (where are all your customers based? You want your data center to be nearby)
o AWS Services (US East 1 has the most services and primary region where everything is released, then those services are dripped down across other regions)
Describe how Activity Zone, Data centers, and Regions all work together
• AWS operates data centers, each AZ has at least one or more data centers (designed for fault isolation), each AWS region is made up of two or more AZ’s. (Data Center > AZ > Region)
What are the 3 factors in choosing your Region
- Data governance (where your data lives),
- Latency (based on where your customers are located – want to keep it located near customers to reduce latency between end user and application)
- Costs (s3 bucket in one region might costs more than one in another region)
Edge Infrastructure
allows you cache data in an s3 bucket for end users (CloudFront – content delivery network)
o AWS Outpost – fully managed service – it is AWS infrastructure and services on prem)
o AWS Local Zones – AWS Infrastructure and services in a large metro centers
o AWS Wavelengths – 5G tech
