What is American Airlines Advantage Program?
A member loyalty program / Frequent flyer program from American Airlines. Created on May 1st 1981 It is the largest program worldwide with over 70 million members.
American Advantage Program Tiers
Gold, Platinum, Platinum Pro and Executive Platinum.
AFT
The rear/ back of the aircraft.
APU
Auxiliary Power Unit
The Auxiliary Power Unit is used for…
It provides ground power to the aircraft when the engines are not running. Used when A/C is parked at the gate.
Arm/ Arming
*Process of attaching the evacuation slide to the A/C floor at departure.
*When the door is open on “arm mode” the slide deploys and inflates.
Concierge Key
An American Airlines Program for it’s very top customers. By invitation only.
Compliance Check
Flight Attendant verification that customers are adhering to safety regulations (seatbelts fastened, luggage stowed, seats forward, etc.)
Deadhead
A crew member traveling on company business as a passenger and occupies a passenger seat.
They are not part of the working crew.
It includes being a person positioned to work a flight from another city or going back home from a previous flight.
Disarm/ Disarming
The process of releasing the evacuation slide from the A/C floor brackets upon arrival.
Dog House
Enclosed storage area onboard the A/C used to store supplies and emergency equipment.
Door Handle
A large door / mounted handle used to open and close a door from the inside of the A/C.
Exit Row Sitting
Seats that a customer can go directly to an exit without entering an aisle.
FAA
Federal Aviation Administration
What does the FAA do?
It’s a government agency that sets standards for aircraft and people in aviation. It monitors the performance of air carriers.

Abbreviation for forward/ Front of the AC.
Girt Bar
A metal bar used to attach the emergency slide to the floor of the A/C.
G.M.L
General Manifest List
What is a GML
A list that provides Flight attendants with customer’s names, and pertinent information about the flight. It is also referred to it as “PIL” or Passenger Information List.
JP
Jump Seat
What is a JP used for
A retractable seat occupied by Flight Attendants for take-off, Landing and turbulence.
LHS
Left hand side. Determined when facing the flight deck.
MC
Main Cabin
Where is the Main Cabin?
The AFT most portion of the A/C. Usually the largest cabin on the A/C.
PSU
Passenger Service Unit
What is a Passenger Service Unit?
It is the area above each passenger’s seat that includes the ventilation system, the light controls, and the FA button.
What is Push Back
When the AC is pushed back from the gate.
RHS
Right hand side. Determined when facing the flight deck.
Slide
It’s an inflatable side to quickly evacuate passengers from AC/C in the event of an emergency. Also referred to as Evacuation slide.
Sterile Flight Deck/ Cockpit
It’s the time period when no communication is allowed between FA’s and Flight Deck crew, except in an emergency. Before A/C ascends through 10,000 feet & after it descends 10,000 feet.
Taxi
Period from which an A/C begins to move forward on its own power, after pushback.
