AVFTB Flashcards
“but the family had an uncle that they were hidin’ in the house, and he snitched to the Immigration”
referring to the Vinny Bonzano story. Used as a plot device - Catherine is told the story so the audience hears it.
“Do you think I am so desperate? My brother is desperate, not me. You think I would carry on my back the rest of my life a woman I didn’t love just to be an American?”
Rodolpho talking to Catherine after she implied that he may only be marrying her for a green card, something Eddie had earlier brought up to her.
“you won’t have a friend in this world Eddie”
Eddie goes to Alfieri after he kisses Rodolpho to try and prove he is gay. Alfieri is aware of eddies strong feelings towards Catherine and knows that he is close to doing something he’ll regret. This refers to the Vinny Bolzano story again as the little boy was humiliated and disregarded by his family.
“nothing at all had really happened”
Alfieri talking about Eddie kissing Rodolpho. Alfieri is aware that Eddie will do something severe in the near future but he can’t do anything about it as nothing has actually happened yet
“the phone is glowing red now”
This signifies a light bulb moment for Eddie. The stage directions see the phone get gradually brighter as the spotlight shines bright the second Eddie has made up his mind that he will phone immigration to try and get rid of Rodolpo
“wearied with it, and concealing a fear of him”
This is Beatrice and Eddie now. After he has phone immigration he is now on his way home. Beatrice and him have been fighting a lot recently and so she is tired and fed up with him, yet because she knows him so well, she has noticed a change in his demeanour as his eyes must be frantic and would after phoning immigration
“just keep in mind who brought them here”
Eddie knows that he has done wrong and is now starting to panic, he is childishly blaming Beatrice, trying to justify in his head that he is in the right. He is trying to make Beatrice feel as though everything that has been going on his her fault because she invited the immigrants to stay. He is an emotional bully.
“she don’t wanna go out now Eddie, its too late”
Beatrice making Eddie aware that there is no coming back from the way he has treated Catherine, the earlier conversation about her independence is long gone and she no longer trusts him. He only wants to be fair on Catherine now in hopes that she realises Rodolpho isn’t the one. Maybe she’ll go off an meet someone else.
“in a driving fright and anger”
Eddie is furious to hear that Catherine has moved upstairs with Rodolpho and other immigrants - his guilt is starting to build. His emotions are mixed as he knows he has done wrong by calling immigration
“she stands a moment staring in realised horror”
Beatrice is now aware of what Eddie has done, throughout their conversation she could see something was off with him yet now it just confirms his actions, she has not got to pick a side, she can side with her husband and be disregarded by the community with him or she can side with the immigrants and lose her husband. However, what Beatrice is doing is not taking part in what’s going on, she simply removes herself from the situation so that the community will accept her and see that Eddie is the problem.
“Marco spits in eddies face”
After immigration take Marco , he is quick to realise that it is eddies fault, throughout the play we see Marco being respectful towards Eddie as it was his house they were staying in yet actions speak louder than words and therefore this shows his complete lack of respect for him now
“you can quicker get back a million dollars that was stolen than a word you gave away”
Referring to the Vinny Bolzano story, community law and American law are very different. Morally, telling immigration that you are harbouring illegal immigrants is correct, but in the eyes of the community, it is wrong and you will be punished. Once you say something you will never be able to get it back.
“justice is very important here”
reference to own community laws
“when you say go, we will go”
Marco showing his respect to Eddie, realising he is the head of the house
“He gives me the heeby geebies”
childish remark from Eddie regarding Rodolfo, can’t find a valued excuse as to why he doesn’t like him
