Autonomic Nervous System (Task 5) Flashcards
Term for neurons carrying autonomic sensory info
General Visceral Afferents
Location of pre-ganglionic neuron cell bodies in sympathetic pathway
Lateral horn of Thoracic vertebra
Location of pre-ganglionic neuron cell bodies in parasympathetic pathway
Brain Stem or Sacral Spinal
Location of post-ganglionic neuron cell bodies in sympathetic pathway
Sympathetic Ganglia of Sympathetic Chain
Location of post-ganglionic neuron cell bodies in parasympathetic pathway
Near or in wall of target organ
Autonomic control and/or cranial nerve control of salivation reflex
PARASYMPATHETIC - Otic and Submandibular ganglion
SYMPATHETIC - Superior Cervical Ganglion
CN IX and CN VII
Autonomic control and/or cranial nerve control of perspiration reflex
Sympathetic Control
CN X
Autonomic control and/or cranial nerve control of pupil reflex
PARASYMPATHETIC - Ciliary Ganglia
SYMPATHETIC - Superior Cervical Ganglia
CN III
Cranial nerves with parasympathetic (secretomotor) components
CN IX supplies parotid gland
CN VII supplies submandibular and sublingual glands
Parasympathetic ganglia examples
Edinger-Westphal Nucleus > Ciliary Ganglion > Constriction of pupil and rounding of lens
Superior Salivatory Nucleus > Carried in Chorda Tympani > Submandibular Ganglion > Sublingual and Submandibular Glands
Superior Salivatory Nucleus > Carried in Greater Petrosal > Pterygopalatine Ganglia > Lacrimal, Nasal and Palatine Glands
Inferior Salivatory Nucleus > Otic Ganglia > Parotid Gland
NUCLEI ALL FOUND IN BRAINSTEM
Sympathetic ganglia examples
Superior Cervical Ganglia sends fibres to C1-C4 plus external carotic, cardiac plexus, pharyngeal plexus
Involved in Horner’s Syndrome
Middle Cervical Ganglia sends fibres to C5-C6 plus heart, thyroid and upper limb
Inferior Cervical Ganglia sends fibres to C7, C8, T1 plus heart and upper limb
