Autonomic Nervous System Flashcards
1
Q
Components of the peripheral nervous system
A
autonomic (involuntary) and somatic (voluntary - skeletal muscle primarily)
2
Q
components of the autonomic nervous system
A
sympathetic and parasympathetic
3
Q
divisions of autonomic nerves
A
- sympathetic: thoracolumbar (EXITS from the thoracic and lumbar regions of the spine)
- parasympathetic: craniosacral (EXITS from the cranial and sacral areas)
- *exits from means that’s where the cell bodies are
4
Q
identifying characteristics of autonomic vs. somatic nerve circuits
A
autonomic system always has at least 2 nerves with a ganglion
somatic may only have one nerve that goes to skeletal muscle
5
Q
dual innervation
A
different nerve systems go to multiple organs, but usually do NOT innervate the same cell type, which is how they cause different responses in different organs
