AUTONOMIC NERVOUS SYSTEM Flashcards
Systemic arterioles
skin
Sympathetic Effect - Vasoconstriction and increased blood pressure
Ex: radial nerve brings blood to thumb area.
Parasympathetic Effect - None
Systemic arterioles
skeletal muscle
Sympathetic Effect - Both, vasoconstriction (most) & vasodilation (some, both directly and from adrenal gland release of catecholamines).
Ex: radial nerve brings blood to thumb area.
Parasympathetic Effect - None
Arterioles (viscera)
Sympathetic Effect - Vasoconstriction
EX: cardiopulmonary splanchnic nerve, abdominopelvic splanchnic nerve.
Parasympathetic Effect - Vasodilation
EX: vagus nerve
Heart (Sinoatrial node)
Sympathetic Effect - Increased heart rate and
contraction strength
EX: cardiopulmonary splanchnic nerve
Parasympathetic Effect - Decreased heart rate and
contraction strength
EX: vagus nerve
Coronary vessels
Sympathetic Effect - Dilation
EX: cardiopulmonary splanchnic nerve
Parasympathetic Effect - Constriction
EX: vagus
Bronchi
Sympathetic Effect - dilation
ex: cardiopulmonary splanchnic nerve
Parasympathetic Effect - constriction
EX: vagus
G-I tract
Sympathetic Effect - Decreased peristaltic contraction; sphincters closed; decreased secretion.
EX: cardiopulmonary splanchnic nerve, abdominopelvic splanchnic nerve.
Parasympathetic Effect - Increased peristaltic contraction; sphincters relaxed; increased secretion
EX: Vagus
Bladder
Sympathetic Effect - Muscle relaxes; internal sphincter closed
EX: abdominopelvic splanchnic nerve.
Parasympathetic Effect - Muscle contracts; internal
sphincter relaxes
EX: pelvic splanchnic nerves
Eye
Sympathetic Effect - Pupil dilate far vision
EX: superior cervical paravertebral ganglion
Parasympathetic Effect - Pupil constricts near vision
EX: CN III Oculomotor nerve
Eyelid
Sympathetic Effect - Elevation (superior tarsal
muscle)
EX: Superior cervical paravertebral ganglion
Parasympathetic Effect - None
EX: none
Sweat glands
Sympathetic Effect - Stimulates secretion
EX: Axillary nerve
Parasympathetic Effect - None
EX: none
Salivary glands
Sympathetic Effect - Slight increase in secretion;
Increased viscosity
EX: superior cervical paravertebral ganglion
Parasympathetic Effect - Stimulates secretion;
Decreased viscosity
EX: CN VII - Facial nerve and CN IX - Glossopharyngeal nerve
Lacrimal glands
Sympathetic Effect - Slight increase secretion
EX: superior cervical paravertebral ganglion
Parasympathetic Effect - Stimulates secretion
EX: CN VII Facial nerve
Liver
Sympathetic Effect - Decreases bile production;
promotes glycogen breakdown
EX: Abdominopelvic splanchnic nerve
Parasympathetic Effect - Increases bile production;
promotes glycogen synthesis
EX: CN X - Vagus nerve
Pancreas
Sympathetic Effect - Inhibits digestive enzyme
production
EX: Abdominopelvic splanchnic nerve
Parasympathetic Effect - Promotes digestive enzyme and
insulin secretion
EX: Vagus nerve
