Autonomic Nervous System Flashcards
What neurotransmitter is released along a somatic effector nerve?
What receptor does its target cell have?
Acetylcholine
Nicotinic receptors
What neurotransmitter is released in the preganglionic sympathetic nerve?
What receptor does the postganglionic cell have?
Acetylcholine
Nicotinic receptors
What neurotransmitter is released in the postganglionic sympathetic nerve?
What type of receptor does the target cell have?
Noradrenaline
Alpha or beta receptors
What neurotransmitter is released by the preganglionic parasympathetic nerve?
What type of receptor does the postganglionic cell have?
Acetylcholine
Nicotinic receptor
What neurotransmitter is released by the postganglionic parasympathetic nerve?
What type of receptor does its target cell have?
Acetylcholine
Muscarinic receptor
What makes up the central nervous system?
Brain
Spinal cord
Retina
CN II
What makes up the peripheral nervous system?
Cranial nerves APART FROM CN II
Spinal nerves
Autonomic nervous system
Somatic sensory and motor nerves
At what vertebral level does the spinal cord terminate?
L1/2
Name the two types of cholinergic receptors
Nicotinic
Muscarinic
What is in the grey rami?
Sympathetic neurons passing into spinal nerves (postganglionic)
What is in the white rami?
Sympathetic neurons passing into the sympathetic chain (preganglionic) and into the spinal nerve
What are splanchnic nerves?
They take sympathetic nerves to organs of the body.
Emerge from sympathetic chain and pass to ganglia near specific organs.
Where do sympathetic nerves that supply the head emerge from?
T1
What is Horner’s syndrome?
Loss of sympathetic supply to the head
What are some symptoms of Horner’s syndrome?
Pupil constriction (miosis)
Vasodilation
Ptosis (droopy eyelid)
Lack of sweating (anhidrosis)
