what is the difference between insane automatism and non insane automatism
insane - caused by disease of the mind
non insane - caused by external factors e.g injury
what must be shown for automatism to be succesfully raised
- D must show a total loc over their actions

can automatism be used as a defence if its self induced
- yes if the defendant wasn’t reckless in inducing the state
- if d was reckless e.g drinking with meds , defence only available for specific intent offences
how does automatism relate to intoxication
- similar to intoxication

- defined by M’Naghten rule
