Autoimmune Hepatitis Flashcards
What type of antibodies are found in autoimmune hepatitis?
IgG
What are the 2 types of autoimmune hepatitis and who do they most commonly occur in?
Type 1 = women in late 40s or 50s after menopause
Type 2 teenagers or early 20s, usually girls
Which type of autoimmune hepatitis is more acute?
Type 2
What autoantibodies are found in type 1 autoimmune hepatitis? (3)
Anti-nuclear antibodies (ANA)
Anti-smooth muscle antibodies (anti-actin)
Anti-soluble liver antigen (anti-SLA/LP)
What autoantibodies are found in type 2 autoimmune hepatitis? (2)
□ Anti-liver kidney microsomes-1 (anti-LKM1)
□ Anti-liver cytosol antigen type 1 (anti-LC1)
What do raised Anti-nuclear antibodies (ANA), Anti-smooth muscle antibodies (anti-actin) and Anti-soluble liver antigen (anti-SLA/LP) indicate?
Type 1 autoimmune hepatitis
What do raised Anti-liver kidney microsomes-1 (anti-LKM1) and Anti-liver cytosol antigen type 1 (anti-LC1) indicate?
Type 2 autoimmune hepatitis
What are the clinical features of acute hepatitis? (5)
○ Anorexia
○ Nausea
○ Jaundice
○ Right upper quadrant pain
○ Hepatomegaly
What is seen on blood tests in autoimmune hepatitis? (3)
Raised transaminases
Raised IgG
Many autoantibodies
What is used to confirm autoimmune hepatitis and what does it show?
Liver biopsy
Interface hepatitis and plasma cell infiltration
What is the medical treatment of autoimmune hepatitis?
• High dose steroids (prednisolone) that are tapered over time as other immunosuppressants, particularly azathioprine, are introduced. Immunosuppressant treatment is usually successful in inducing remission however it is usually required life long.
What is the downside of liver transplant in autoimmune hepatitis?
AH can occur again in transplanted liver
