Figurative Language
Techniques that use words in ways that are different from their literal meanings to achieve a more subtle, complex or powerful effect
Diction
Diction means word choice. Authors choose particular words purposefully to convey a certain tone, mood or register.
Tone
Tone is the speaker OR author’s attitude towards what they are saying.
Mood
Mood is the atmosphere or feelings that a work evokes in an audience or reader.
Metaphor
Metaphors compare two different things by saying or implying that one thing is the other.
Simile
A simile directly compares two unlike things, most often use the connecting words “like” or “as.” HOWEVER, a simile can also use other words that indicate an explicit comparison.
Personification
When non-human things are described as having human or human-like attributes.
Imagery
Descriptive language that engages the five human senses (sight, smell, sound, taste and touch).
Symbolism
Symbolism is when one thing (usually a physical object) represents something else (usually something more abstract, like a bigger idea or concept).
Juxtaposition
Juxtaposition occurs when an author places two things side by side as a way of highlighting their differences.
