- Language used is as close as possible to natural conversation
- Costumes were contemporary, sets were lifelike

- Reaction to realism- began in the 1900s
- Used to express feelings and emotions without characters using dialogue
- Sought to portray inner psychological life of a character- subjective view of word
- Lighting, music, staging were used to create atmosphere and expressionism

A dramatic device that blurs the boundaries between the past and the present
