What is Qualitatswein?
The highest caliber of Austrian wine. Regional specified and sourced from a single vineyard or one of the 16 smaller wine regions. Only 35 permitted grapes.
Must pass a tasting panel and chemical analysis indicated by a state control number and red/ white banderole on capsule
Wein
A generic category that replaced Tafelwein in time for the 2009 vintage. Can’t exhibit any label more exclusive than osterreich.
Landwein
Restricted to the same 35 permitted varietals as Qualitatswein but the wines are labeled with one of three broad geographic areas.
