Which is the order of the three levels of origin’s pyramid for DAC wine?
Briefly describe the appeal of each levels of origin DAC wine category.
There is a clear profiling into three distinct levels observed, regarding many DAC wines, so, at the bottom of the pyramid are Gebietsweine (regional wines), climb up are Ortsweine (local or “villages” wine), and at the top Riedenweine (single-vineyard wine).
• Gebietsweine (e.g. Weinviertel DAC, etc.): they represent the classic and typical style of the specified DAC winegrowing region. From dry white wines (labelled “trocken”) in this category, one should expect a certain lightness of texture, refreshing character and pleasant fruit flavours (even if there are more sophisticated expression, such as Leithaberg DAC in Burgenland federal state).
•Ortsweine (e.g. Südsteiermark DAC Kitzeck-Sausal): interpret as the middle category between Gebietsweine and Riedenweine, they show the character typical of the municipality, by bearing the name of the cadastral commune or, mostly the case, of the Grosslage (large vineyard site spread over multiple cadastral communes).
• Riedenweine (e.g. Kamptal DAC Ried Zöbinger Heiligenstein): the most narrowly defined designation of origin. Complexity and deep are the key features of these wines. They also can show “Reserve” on the label, in case they are.
