Q

Residential sprinklers can be called up through few different ways, explain some of the key differences

  • AS2118.1-1999 (Special Sprinklers)
  • AS2118.1-2017 (Residential LH)
  • AS2118.4-1995
  • AS2188.4-2012
A

**Part 1-1999: **
* 6.1m Max Spacing (4.9K Metric)
* Requries sprinkler listing L/m for 4 most remote.
* C/S = 10mm, (21m2), 2.3m max Spacing
* Hydrostatic Test = (Refer to 2118.9 Section 3) 1400kPa or 400 kPa in excess of maximum static working pressure, whichever is greater

**Part 1-2017: **
* Typically 4.9m Max Spacing, (4.9K Metric) (Can go more corridors but in large rooms its better to go 4.9m due to amount of water required / pipe size)
* Requires 4.1mm/min/m2 for the four most remote (4.9x4.9x4.1=98.44 per head, 4 x 98.44 = 393.76 plus)
* Allows for shadowed areas (1.4m2)
* C/S = 15mm,, 8.0k Metric (21m2) 2.4m max spacing
* Hydrostatic Test = 1600kPa or 400kPa in excess of max static working pressure (which ever is greater)

**Part 4-1995: **
* 6.1m max spacing, (4.9K Metric)
* Requries sprinkler listing L/m for 4 most remote.
* C/S =10mm, 21m2
* Hydrostatic test = 1500kPa

**Part 4-2012: **
* 4.9m Max spacing, (4.9K Metric)
* 4 Most Remote but not less than 200L/min
* C/S = 10mm, (42m2)
* Exemptions - Cupboards, wardrobes, pantries, alcoves (less than 3m2), toilets, bathrooms, porches, balconies, carports, walkways, stairs.
* Ancillary areas less tham 75m2 (kitchens, dining rooms, laudries, plant) = 4 most remote
* Ancillary areas more than 75m2 (car parks, retail, dedicated plant rooms) = 8.0K Metric, 3 most remote @ 60L/min.
* Hydrostatic Test = 1400kPa or 400kPa in excess of max static working pressure, which ever is greater.

Q

Name some differences between AS2118.1-1999 & AS2118.1-2017

A

AS2118.1-1999

  • C/S = 10mm
  • LH = 48 L/min for 6 most remote
  • Balconies = “6m2 and 2m depth”
  • Old way of calculating water demands
    Area of operation = 5mm/min, OH1 = 72m2, OH2 = 144m2, OH3 = 216m2, OH Special = 360m2
  • Exposure protection = 10m (Seciton 3.1.2.1)

AS2118.1-2017
* C/S = 15mm, 80K Metric
* New way to Calculate water demands
LH = 70kPa head pressure for 6 most remote
OH = 60 L/min from no. of sprinklers ind design area, OH1= Design area = OH = 6, OH2 = 12, OH3 = 18, OH3 = 30
* No longer uses terms of Grade 1 to 3 water supply. Now refers to single water supply, Dual water supply.
* Towns main should provide adequate flow for simultaneous operation of sprinkler & hydrants.
* Focus on water conservation with recommendation of recirculation tank fo rSCV test, testing pumps, drain downs.
* Balconies = “6m2 or 2m depth”
* Ommited Areas = High voltage, Silos/bins, Ovens/Kilns, screens/sheilds for wet ends of papermaking, salt baths, metal melt pens, uncovered potable water, commercial cookiing equipment that is protected by AS 3772, Fire Isolated stairways/passageways.
* Exposure protection = 6m (Section 3.2.1b)
* New Sections 11 (High Hazard class systems), 12 (Special Commodities), 13 (Flammable & combustible liquids)
* Car Stacker details (Section 10.6)
