Auscultation Flashcards
Reduced breath sounds
Severe asthma - bronchoconstriction Anaphylaxis - bronchoconstriction Obstruction - foreign body, tumor, etc PTX Pleural effusion Pneumonia - consolidation COPD Poor respiratory effort - see causes of low RR
Bronchial breathing
Consolidation (pneumonia)
ILD
Fine inspiratory crackles
Pulmonary edema
COPD
Consolidation (pneumonia)
ILD / fibrosis
Coarse crackles - heard both inspiration and expiration
Bronchiectasis
ILD / fibrosis
Pleural rub
Pleuritis / pleurisy - usually with pneumonia
PE
Stridor
Anaphylaxis - laryngeal edema Inhaled foreign body Epiglottitis Croup Laryneal papillomas Laryngomalacia (congenital)
Inspiratory monophonic wheeze
Inhalation of foreign body
Tracheal obstruction - internal (e.g. tumor) or external (compression - e.g esophageal tumor)
Trachea blunt trauma - causes change in voice
Vocal cord paralysis - causes change in voice
Expiratory monophonic wheeze
Same as insipiratory monophonic - trachea is the cause
Expiratory polyphonic, high-pitched wheeze
Asthma exacerbation
Pulmonary edema
Anaphylaxis
Wheezy bronchitis (infection)
