Before starting what should be done?
1) Screen for pain
2) Ensure patient is comfortably seated
3) Select appropriate speculum
What can be seen anterior-inferior aspect?
Light reflex
What can be seen anterior-superior aspect?
Anterior fold
What can be seen posterior-superior aspect?
Posterior fold
What can be seen centrally passing forwards?
The handle of malleus
What is found centrally at the superior aspect?
The attic
What is the region most superior and anterior referred to as?
The Pars flaccida
What is the region most inferior referred to as?
The Pars tensa
What is the “ear drums” true name?
The tympanic membrane
When examining what are you looking for?
> Colour – pearly grey and translucent (normal) / erythematous (inflammation)
> Erythema or bulging of the membrane – inspect for a fluid level e.g. otitis media
> Perforation of the membrane – note the size of the perforation
> Light reflex – absence/distortion may indicate ↑ inner ear pressure e.g. otitis media
> Scarring of the membrane – tympanosclerosis – can result in significant hearing loss
> Cholesteatoma – around the superior part of the eardrum
When would you change speculum between ears?
> Confirmed infection
> Any discharge was present
