Dance which aims to clarify the music. Music is source of choreography
Music co-existence
Made separately but may share same themes or directive. Often do not work with music until end of rehearsals
Disassociation
Dance and music made independently. Normally only hear music on performance/ post-modernism
Enhancement of mood/atmosphere
Aural setting aids in the communication of theme. Dance created first, music is only there to create atmosphere
Silence
No music or sound. Audience are not guided by what they hear/ allows an open message
Working with the lyrics
Choreographer illustrates the words in the music. Not reenacting words just hinting
Identification of character
A musical phrase which is a signature tune for a character in ballet also known as Leitmotif
Narrative
The music and dance work together to tell a story. A Frequently used relationship in ballet of 19th century
Call and response
Similar to a conversation, one calls and the other responds. May also be used between a dancer and dancer. Commonly used in Afro-Caribbean
Direct correlation
Music and dance usually composed at the same time. They work together using same tempo etc.
