Augustine Flashcards
Fall
The moment when Adam and Eve disobeyed god by eating the fruit of the forbidden tree; humans are fallen because of this moment.

The essential sense of what all humans are like; shared characteristics.
Sin
Turning away from the will of god
Concupiscence
The idea that our natural perfected state has been wounded so that we are not bad, but always drive towards sin.
Human Will
For Augustine, given to humans by god at creation and used to make choices. It is driven by self love and generous love which work together to help people choose to love god properly.
Original sin
The state that all humans were brought in to by the fall, which was the first sin
Grace
Gods generous, undeserved gift and free act of love for the world though Jesus.
Summon bonum

Predestination
The idea that god chooses and guides some people to salvation
Pelagius
1) There is no relation between Adams sin and the state people are born
2) People have free will to choose good or evil.
3) There is a grace of God active in the world.
Charles Darwin
