Prediction
a thing predicted; a forecast.
Observation
a remark, statement, or comment based on something one has seen, heard, or noticed.
Hypothesis
a supposition or proposed explanation made on the basis of limited evidence as a starting point for further investigation.
Experiment
a scientific procedure undertaken to make a discovery, test a hypothesis, or demonstrate a known fact.
Peer Review
evaluation of scientific, academic, or professional work by others working in the same field.
Independent Variable
a variable whose variation does not depend on that of another.
Dependent Variable
a variable whose value depends on that of another.
Experimental Group
Experiments is the step in the scientific method that arbitrates between competing models or hypotheses. Experimentation is also used to test existing theories or new hypotheses in order to support them or disprove them.
Control Group
When an experiment is conducted for the purpose of determining the effect of a single variable of interest on a particular system, a scientific control is used to minimize the unintended influence of other variables on the same system.
Indicator
a thing, esp. a trend or fact, that indicates the state or level of something.
Sustainability
the ability to be sustained, supported, upheld, or confirmed.
Land degradation
the value of the biophysical environment is affected by one or more combination of human-induced processes acting upon the land.
Trade off
a balance achieved between two desirable but incompatible features; a compromise.
Correlation
mutual relationship or connection between two or more things.
Causal relationship
Causality is the relationship between an event (the cause) and a second event (the effect), where the second event is a consequence of the first.
