Auditory Structure and Function Flashcards
What is Frequency?
The number of waves that pass a given point in a given time
What is Pitch?
The perception of different frequencies
What is Amplitude?
The intensity of the sound
- Low amplitude = soft sound
- High amplitude = Loud sound
What is Loudness?
The subjective interpretation of sound intensity which varies with pressure amplitude
What is the function of the External Ear?
It collets sound waves and passes them inwards towards the middle ear
- Ear lobe = Pinna
Structures of the middle ear
(3)
1) Malleus
2) Incus
3) Stapes
What is the function of the middle ear?
Amplifies sound to project into the inner ear.
Middle ear also protects against loud sounds (only if you know its coming)
What is otosclerosis?
Loss of ossicle mobility
Structure of the Bony Labyrinth?
- Filled with perilymph (similar to ECF)
- Contains the Scala vestibuli and the Scala tympanic
Structure of the Membranous Labyrinth?
- Filled with Endolymph
- Contains Scala media
What is the Utricle and Saccule?
They are both otolith organs
Utricle - is horizontally orientated –> detects horizontal movement
Saccule - is vertically orientated –> detects vertical movements
What is Ampulla?
Is the dilation in the semicircular canals.
What causes motion sickness?
Uncoordinated movements between the eyes and the head
What is Menieres disease?
Labyrinth disorder that effects the cochlea and canals
