Audiology Flashcards
Between what frequencies is a pure tone audio gram commonly measured?
250-8000Hz
What do circles on an audio gram represent?
Air conduction Right ear
What do crossed on an audio gram represent?
Air conduction left ear
What do triangles on an audio gram represent?
Bone conduction left and right ears
How is masked bone hearing represented on an audio gram?
Square brackets
Other than audiology name two other investigative hearing tests
Speech audiometry
Immittance audiometry
In the adult population how many people are estimated to have a hearing loss?
1 in 7
What is the major cause of hearing loss on adults and what type of hearing loss is it?
Presbyacusis- age related damage to hair cells or nerves in cochlea causing sensorineural hearing loss
Name the 5 categories of hearing ability
Normal Mild Moderate Severe Profound
Why does it not matter which side unmasked bone conduction is tested on?
Bone conduction occurs on both sides and the sound will travel through the bone to the better cochlea
Name the three types of tympanogram and what they show
Type A- normal pressure in middle ear
Type B- no sharp peak (perforation or obstruction)
Type C- negative pressure in middle ear—> eustacian tube dysfunction
Name three styles of hearing aids
Behind the ear (BTE)
In the ear (ITE)
Receiver in canal (RIC)
How can you improve the effectiveness of a hearing aid?
Ensure it is switched on, and correctly fitted
Tap in to loop setting if available
Name 3 causes of tinnitus
Acoustic neuroma, Ménière’s disease, otosclerosis, drugs (aspirin, aminoglycosides such as gentamicin, loop diuretics, quinine- all potentially ototoxic)
What is the name of the test you would use to assess the hearing of an 18 months old?
Visual reinforcement audiometry
