Audio Editing Flashcards
is the process of manipulating audio to alter length, speed, and volume or to create additional versions such as loops.
Audio Editing
means reproduction of sound
Audio
means to the frequencies detectable by human ear specifically 20HZ and 20 KHZ.
Sound
is the production, recording, manipulation and reproduction of sound waves.
Audio Editing
the first device to record sound waves for visual study only as it did not have the capabilities to playback what was recorded
Phonautograph
-a cylinder covered with material that could be etched upon with a stylus
-Perfected by “Mr. Light Bulb,” Thomas Edison (who also patented the first American motion picture camera)
-play-back possible by tracing a needle through the grooves and amplifying the sound vibrations
Phonograph
-much like a phonograph, but used a flat disc instead of a round cylinder
-instead of depth etching as on the phonograph, sound-waves on the gramophone were etched with differing widths -Emile Berliner (inventor) called these discs “gramophone records” and Americans called them “phonograph records”
Gramophone
-increased the flexibility of the process and the sound quality of the recordings
-made it possible to record one part (track) to a disc record, then play it back
Electric Microphone Recording Process
-involves the use of a magnetizable medium (tape), moving at a constant speed past a recording head,
sound waves are electrified through microphones
Magnetic Tape
-the tape is divided into multiple tracks parallel with each other
-the induction of STEREO sound
Multitrack Recordings
-Alesis 1991
-machine that uses VHS video tape to record 8-tracks of digit audio
Alesis Digital Audio Tape Recorders (ADAT)
-Sony 1987
-much like a cassette tape but recorded digital
audio at 16-bits instead of analog audio
Digital Audio Tape (DAT)
-music can be stored on and distributed through a personal computer with ease
-no more need of “tape” of any kind as the rec orded music can now be saved as computer “memory”
Hard Disc Recorders
-are any sounds produced by non-human organisms as well as those
-generated by natural, non-biological sources within their normal soundscapes
-human voice
Natural sounds
-meaning any sound with a source caused by human
Man-Made sound
