Kindling, building, maintaining or using an open fire is prohibited. What are the 5 exceptions?
- Portable outdoor barbecues as authorized by FC 307.5 see section 5 below.
- Outdoor noncommercial barbecue fires in equipment provided by and located in city parks where such open fires are allowed by the Department of Parks and Recreation.
- In connection with training of fire brigades or similar purposes by persons or entities where such training is required by law, rule or regulation.
- Approved open fires used for special effects in connection with television, motion picture, theatrical and other entertainment productions.
- Coke-fueled salamanders at a construction site in accordance with FC307.6 and the rules.
GENERAL PRECAUTIONS AGAINST FIRE
Open fires allowed pursuant to FC 307.1 may only be kindled, built, maintained or used with the prior written authorization of the agencies with regulatory jurisdiction, property owner and other required approvals, and only when such open fires are maintained in compliance with all conditions of such authorization or approval. - if these devices are found by Fire officials they should order the use of these devices discontinued immediately. No further enforcement action is required other than the discontinuance of use at this time
- If the use of an outdoor fireplace becomes a chronic problem at the same location the Fire official should order the use of the outdoor fireplace discontinued immediately and serve a summons at this time for failure to comply with FC 307.1 and/or FC 307.2.

Outdoor decorative gas appliances are stationary or built-in appliances connected to a fixed fuel piping system for use in outdoor spaces only and do not incorporate a venting system. The primary function of this appliance lies in the aesthetic effect of the flame. Acceptable outdoor decorative gas appliances shall be listed and labeled by an approved agency.
What are the 4 design requirements?
- An emergency shut off gas valve shall be installed.
- Outdoor decorative gas appliances shall be located outdoors and at least 5 feet from any building or structure.
- Outdoor decorative gas appliances shall not be located beneath, or closer than 5 feet to combustible decorations and combustible overhangs, awnings, sun control devices or similar combustible attachments to buildings or structures.
- Outdoor decorative gas appliances shall not be located within 5 feet of exits or exit discharges

Storage in buildings
Storage of combustible materials in buildings shall be maintained in a neat, orderly manner. Storage shall be separated from heaters or heating devices by distance or shielding so that ignition cannot occur. (FC 315.2)
