In the film, there are only a few differences between the Jewish and Christian boys to reinforce the idea that religion should not be used to separate or cause conflict between people.

Even though this is the intention of the film, there are still subtle differences in order to show that you can still be friends or love another, even though they are different to yourself.
Même si c’est l’intention du film, il y a encore des différences subtiles pour montrer que vous pouvez toujours être amis ou aimer un autre bien qu’ils soient différents de vous-même.
Louis Malle, the director, sets his film during WW2 in occupied France. The protagonist is called Julien Quentin, who goes to a boarding school in the countryside in order to escape from the bombings in Paris.
Louis Malle, le réalisateur, situe son film durant la Deuxième Guerre mondiale en France occupée. Le protagonist s’appelle Julien Quentin, qui va à l’internat à la champagne pour échapper aux bombardements de Paris.
Although it is a very religious school, some of the boys are quite naughty and participate in a black market, where they trade their rations with the assistant of the school chef, Joseph, who is bullied by the other students.
Bien qu’il soit un collège très religieux, certains des garcons sont assez vilains et participent au marché noir, où ils commercent leurs rations avec l’assistant de la cuisinière du collège, Joseph, qui est intimidé par les autres étudiants.
The main storyline in the film is about the growing friendship between the two protagonists Julien and Jean Bonnet. At the start, their relationship is quite hostile because of Julien’s jealousy of Bonnet. Although Julien is really intelligent, Bonnet is more capable than Julien of earning better grades. Therefore, Julien is no longer the best student in his class.
Le scénario principale dans le film est sur l’amitié croissante entre les deux personnages Julien et Jean Bonnet. Au début, leur rapport est assez hostile en raison de la jalousie de Julien de Bonnet. Bien que Julien soit vraiment intelligent, Bonnet est plus capable que Julien pour gagner les meilleures notes. Donc, Julien n’est plus le meilleur étudiant dans sa classe.
