Atypical pneumonia Flashcards
1
Q
Atypical pneumonia
A
Penicillin resistant
‘Walking pneumonia’ as no hospitalised
Less serious cough, SOB and chest pain.
2
Q
Atypical pneumonia causative organisms?
A
Mycoplasma pneumoniae
Chlamydophilia
Legionella pneumoniae
3
Q
Mycoplasma pneumoniae
A
V small
No peptidoglycan (cholesterol instead)
Young adults and students
Bind to cillia epithelia cells
4
Q
Chlamydophilia pneumoniae
A
Small obligate anaerobe, gram -ve
No peptidoglycan
Flu like symptoms
Cannot culture so detect w ELISA and microflourecence
5
Q
Legionella pneumoniae
A
Motile aerobic rod gram -ve Pneumonia symps + confusion No human transmission - from showers, taps, spas and air con (hotels, hospitals, flats) Invades phagocytes and lung cells Detect antigens in urine
6
Q
What causes penicilin resistance?
A
Penicilin kills bacteria by stopping peptidoglycan formation therefore atypical pneumonia are resistant.
