mirtazapine, bupropion
What is the mode of action of mirtazapine?
enhances serotonin and norepinephrine neurotransmission by acting as an antagonist at presynaptic alpha2 receptors. There may be antagonism at the 5-HT2 receptors as well
What are the side effects of mirtazapine?
Sedating because of its potent antihistaminic activity (beneficial for patients with insomnia)
Increased appetite
Weight gain
What are the benefits of mirtazapine other than its antidepressant effects?
Does not cause sexual dysfunction or have antimuscarinic side effects. It can block serotonergic side effects (serotonin syndrome) if used with SSRI’s
What is the mode of action of bupropion?
Weak dopamine and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor use to alleviate symptoms of depression.
What are the other useful properties of bupropion
Decrease cravings and decrease withdrawal symptoms of nicotine in patients trying to quit smoking
What are the side effects if bupropion?
Dry mouth, sweating, nervousness, tremor and dose dependent increased risk for seizures
When is the use of bupropion inappropriate?
In patients with eating disorders or at risk for seizures
What are the benefits of using bupropion?
minimal risk of sexual dysfunction
