Attributions Flashcards
What are attributions?
Causes of our and others behaviour
Attribution theories
Explain naive scientist
People act like common sense scientists forming reasons for others behaviour
As own behaviour is reasoned, so must everyone else’s!!
Causal theories mean we look for stable properties in environment. Traits in people or stable parts of situations
Over- rely on dispositions traits
Attribution theories
Correspondence inference
We rely on 5 cues for correspondence inference, functioning as similar to algorithm.
Name the 5 steps in correspondence model?
1- is Behaviour chosen?
2- non- common effect- behaviours with effects unique effect to that behaviour
3- behaviour not socially desirable
4- is behaviour of person directly affecting us?
5- is behaviour directed towards us?
What is the covariation model?
When assigning a causal role to behaviour we act like scientists
Covariation model
What are the 3 classes of information when attributing causal behaviour
Consistency- is behaviour consistent with this stimuli? I.e always laugh at comedian
Distinctiveness- behaviour occurs across many different kinds of stimuli
Consensus- extent to other people react similarly
When do people make internal attributions?
Consistency- high
Distinctness- low
Consensus- low
When do people make external attributions?
Consistency- high
Distinctness- high
Consensus- high
