Descartes’ view of omnipotence
~God can do the logically impossible
~He can sustain logical contradictions such as a stone that is too heavy for him to lift
~Any other understanding of omnipotence would place limits on God’s greatness
Aquinas’ view of omnipotence
~God can do all things that’re logically possible
Vardy’s view of omnipotence
~Argues that God deliberately limits his own power
~He created the world in such a way that his own power would have to be limited as a result
Geach’s view of omnipotence
~Omnipotence derives from the Greek word ‘Pantokrator’ which Geach translates as ‘almighty’
~This means power over everything rather than a power to do everything
Tillich’s view on omnipotence
~The ‘power’ of God should not be taken literally
