Women have gained more rights.
When was the sex discrimination act introduced and what does it mean?
1975
- aimed to reduce sexism in society…
- by making it illegal to discriminate in employment on grounds of gender or whether someone is married
What right was given to women in 1882?
The right to keep their property separate form that of their husband.
What right was given to women in 1918?
The right to vote in elections and become councillors and MPs.
When was the equal pay act introduced and what does it mean?
1970
- Women were to receive the same pay as men for the same work.
Give two reasons why attitudes towards the roles of men and women have changed.
Any two of the below:
- The work of the suffragettes movement meant women weren’t prepared to stand for unequal treatment
- WW2, women showed their capability in work
- The development of equal rights for women in other countries made it difficult to claim they weren’t necessary in the UK
- Women’s vote and sex discrimination act

Men and women have separate roles and so cannot be equal in religion

- CCC, says they should be equal
- Only men can be priests because the apostles were men
- Only men can be priests because Jesus was a man and the priest represents Jesus in the mass
- GENESIS, creation story, God created men and women at the same time and are therefore equal.

- Bible: St Paul teaches that women shouldn’t teach or speak in church
