attitudes towards the crusaders Flashcards
Money and Finance
Saladin Tithe: a large tax that didn’t need to be paid if you went on Crusade
The tax paid for Richard’s army and was on top of existing taxes
People saw going on Crusade as a way not to pay
Managing England
Richards army was made up of 800 knights who also had to manage the land
Peasants didn’t need to fight and made up about 80% of the population
There were fewer Knights to manage the estates, for those left behind they became angry that their work increased
Religious Duty
Pope Gregory had issued a papal bull and an indulgence (guaranteed entry to heaven if you died in battle)
Anti-Semitic attitudes in England (Pogroms 1189-1190)
Inspirited anti-Muslim fever, and consequently people were encouraged to support the Crusades
Country’s Morale
Richard had failed to capture Jerusalem and was kidnapped on the way home, more taxes for the ransom
People were already paying increased taxes from the Saladin tithe, and John’s rebellion
A country already burdened by fines became more burdened, and this created further hardship
